'''Euroleague''' (EL), also known as '''Euroleague Basketball''' is highest level and very most important professional basketball competition in Europe, with teams from up to 18 other European countries. competition is operated by ULEB, a Europe-wide consortium of leading professional basketball leagues. Clubs from Israel, entirely in Asia, are also part of system.

league usually, but not always, includes domestic champions from leading countries. Depending on country, places in Euroleague may be awarded on basis of:

* Performance in previous season's domestic league.

* Performance over previous two or three domestic seasons.

* Contracts with ULEB.

* In addition, winner of previous season's ULEB Eurocup receives a place.

For example, two 2007-08 domestic champions from ULEB member countries did not compete in Euroleague 2008-09—KK Zadar (A1 Liga) and Hapoel Holon (Ligat HaAl (basketball)). Zadar played in second-level ULEB Eurocup in ULEB Eurocup 2008-09. Hapoel Holon, however, did not compete in ''any'' of three European continental club competitions—not even third-tier EuroChallenge (which is run by FIBA Europe instead of ULEB).

Starting with 2009–10 season, entrance criteria have changed:

* Thirteen clubs, chosen via a formula based on competitive performance, television revenues, and home attendance, receive "A Licences", giving them automatic entry into Euroleague Regular Season phase. A Licences are awarded for three years, meaning that next adjustment of A Licences will not take place until 2012–13.

* Eight clubs receive one-year "B Licences" into Euroleague Regular Season. Seven of them are directly based on ranking of domestic league in which club competes. eighth is a three-year "wildcard" licence based on similar factors to A Licences; first such licence was awarded to ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne of Ligue Nationale de Basketball.

* winner of previous year's Eurocup receives a one-year "C Licence" into Euroleague Regular Season. If club qualifies for a direct B Licence into Regular Season via its domestic league, C Licence will be awarded to club not already qualified for Regular Season that is highest on Euroleague entry list.

* Eight other clubs receive one-year "B Licences" into Euroleague qualifying rounds, with two advancing into Regular Season.

European Champions' Cup Teams Divided

Euroleague (or historically called, ''European Champions' Cup'') was originally established by World-wide Basketball Federation and it operated under its umbrella from 1958 until summer of 2000, including 1999/2000 season. That was when ULEB, short for Union of European Leagues of Basketball, was created by 24 richest club teams, very most of them from Spain, Italy and Greece.

Amazingly, FIBA had never trademarked Euroleague name and ULEB simply used it without any legal ramifications because FIBA had no legal recourse to do anything about it, so they had to find a new name for their league. Thus, following 2000/2001 season started with 2 separate top European basketball competitions: FIBA Suproleague (known as FIBA Euroleague up to that point) and brand new ULEB Euroleague.

rift in European club basketball initially showed no signs of letting up. Top clubs were also split between two leagues: Panathinaikos BC, Maccabi Tel Aviv B.C., PBC CSKA Moscow and Efes Pilsen S.K. stayed with FIBA, At the same time Olympiacos BC, Virtus Bologna, Real Madrid Baloncesto, FC Barcelona Bàsquet, Saski Baskonia and Pallacanestro Treviso joined ULEB.

In May 2001, Europe had two continental champions, Maccabi of FIBA Suproleague and Kinder Bologna of ULEB Euroleague. leaders of both organizations realized need to come up with a new single competition. Negotiating from position of strength, ULEB dictated proceedings and FIBA essentially had no choice but to agree to their terms. As a result, Euroleague was fully integrated under ULEB's umbrella and teams that competed in FIBA Suproleague during 2000/2001 season joined it as well.

In essence, authority in European basketball was divided over club-country lines. FIBA stayed in charge of national team competitions (like EuroBasket, FIBA World Championship, and Olympics) At the same time ULEB took over professional club competitions. From that point on, FIBA's Korac Cup and Saporta Cup competitions lasted only one more season before folding, which was when ULEB launched ULEB Cup, now known as ULEB Eurocup.

Euroleague Format

Beginning with Euroleague 2009–10, Euroleague's first phase will be '''Qualifying Rounds''', which involve eight clubs bracketed into a knockout tournament consisting of two-legged tie. four survivors of First Qualifying Round are paired against one another for Second Qualifying Round, with two winners continuing in Euroleague. All losing clubs in Qualifying Rounds parachute into ULEB's second-tier ULEB Eurocup.

next phase is '''Regular Season''', in which 24 teams participate; from 2009–10, participants will include 22 clubs automatically entered into Regular Season plus two Qualifying Round winners. Each team plays two games (home-and-away) against every other team in its group. At end of Regular Season, field is cut from 24 to 16. Before 2008–09, teams were divided into three groups of eight teams each, with top five teams in each group plus top sixth-place finisher advancing. Now, Regular Season involves four groups with six teams each, with first four teams in each group advancing.

second phase, known as '''Top 16''', then begins, featuring 16 survivors of Regular Season, drawn into four-team groups. As in Regular Season, each Top 16 group is contested in a double Round-robin tournament format.

third phase, '''Quarterfinal round''', has been played since Euroleague 2004-05. Before, only group winners advanced to Final Four (see below). Now, first- and second-place teams from each group advance. In quarterfinal round, first-place team from each group is matched against a second-place team from another group in a playoff series. Through 2007-08 season, series was best-of-three playoff, and expanded to best-of-five playoff for 2008-09. Home advantage in series goes to first-place team.

'''Final Four''', held at a predetermined site, features winners of four quarterfinal series in one-off knockout matches. semifinal losers play for third place; winners play for championship.

2009 Final Four was held on May 1-3 at O2 World in Berlin. 2010 Final Four will be held at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris.
